Crowley & Co. and the Heritage Arts Company are holding a day of auditions for the lead role of Pip in their upcoming production of Great Expectations at the Old Red Lion Theatre, Islington, 12th Dec 2017 – 6th January 2018. We are specifically looking to audition BAME, male 18 – 26 years old actors for this performance. Great Expectations is set in a diverse, modern London and it’s crucial that this story of social mobility has a cast reflective of its message. The casting call will take place at the Old Red Lion Theatre on the 12th October, 2017. Please see below for application details. ABOUT THE SHOW Great Expectations is a funny, fast-paced and moving adaptation of the novel by Charles Dickens, catapulting Pip into the 21st century. The script, adapted by Tom Crowley (Shock Treatment, The Quentin Dentin Show) fully reimagines the classic story for the modern day, while capturing Dickens’s humour, his humanity and his sense of adventure. Great Expectations remains a story about the ageless themes of unrequited love, the divide between the rich and the poor, and what it means to be a ‘good person’. Pip is a council estate boy with no money, and no hope for the future. His mother, widow Jo Gargery, is a police officer struggling to provide for herself and her son. Before long, Pip’s life is changed forever after he meets mysterious fugitive Magwycz, the beautiful but troubled Estella and the fearsome, wounded Miss Havisham. March arrives, another VAULT Festival comes to an end with a celebration. After six weeks of eclectic performances, VAULT Festival 2016 closed on Sunday 6th March, after our most successful year yet with 45,000 in attendance over the six weeks. Highlights were celebrated with VAULT Festival Awards for shows such as ‘Skin A Cat’, ‘The Vanishing Man’, ‘Orator’ and many others. The past six weeks have thoroughly satisfied the intellects, funny bones, dancing feet, hunger and thirst of VAULT Festival’s 45,000 visitors. 204 groups of artists presented performances, film screenings, parties, workshops and more, from 27th January until 6th March in the arches beneath Waterloo Station. Furthermore this year’s new addition of a pop-up restaurant, The Suffolk Punch, served over 5000 diners and received rave reviews. Tim had this to say: ‘VAULT 2016 aimed to bring people together to see wild and adventurous performances underground, and we’re proud that so many people came along for the ride. The sense of adventure that London’s audiences bring to VAULT is what keeps it going, and as plans are made about the future, the Festival is fiercely guarding its authenticity and reputation as a place for artists and audiences to take risks and share in success. Following the enormous success of this year’s VAULT Festival, today we can announce that VAULT will return to Waterloo’s Leake Street tunnels from 28 January 2015 with six weeks of carefully curated, high quality arts programming for guests to discover. Hooray! The 2014 Festival saw over £100,000 go into the coffers of the participating artists. We are pretty proud of this, though really its the quality of the work and the people that we met that convinced us that London needs this festival. Over 20, 000 tickets were sold, with guests able to choose from 60 different events across the six weeks; up to 20 events were on offer each night across the seven chambers of The Vaults. VAULT 2015 will again see an eclectic mix of performance disciplines cohere in a space for adventure, discovery and fun. The artistic programme will be available alongside The VAULT Bar, open to the public every night, and one-off events – both ticketed and free. We’re very proud to announce that we’re working with Nicolas Kent, the polymath and dedicated sabre-rattler who ran Kilburn’s Tricycle Theatre for many years, on a new play by Rashid Razaq: The Nightmares of Carlos Fuentes, based on the acclaimed short story by Hassan Blasim. Nick’s chosen a really interesting play, taking some apparently familiar scenes and injecting them with surreal, challenging, and funny ideas. We didn’t know what to make of it on first reading, but his choices, and our meetings with the cast and creative team are leading us to think this is going to be a really great production. Nabil Elouahabi plays the lead – a refugee with a very funny idea of identity. The play goes from funny to tragic very quickly and Ellan Parry’s design is going to fit really well in the new Arcola space. We run from July 23rd to August 16th and you can book tickets here.
